Just barely catching my breath from CiL (quick! exhale!) and my 6-week online course through the Education Institute begins tomorrow. I usually try to have all the content done and delivered a few weeks before the start of the course, but with CiL this year, I only managed to get the first 2 weeks out before having to turn my attention to conference prep. But, instead of being stressed by the tight schedule, I’m actually luxuriating in it, because now I have a chance to work in some of the cool stuff I learned at the conferernce. Here’s what we’re covering in this course:

The principles of blog design and usability and how to put those principles to work on your library blog.

What makes good blog content and how to write content and style guidelines for multi-author blogs.

Taking RSS further, including how to incorporate RSS feeds into your website and building reading lists with OPML.

Marketing your blog and RSS feeds.

Social bookmarking tools such as del.icio.us, Furl, and Flickr and their use in libraries.

Podcasting for content-delivery.

I don’t know if you’ve tried Feedster over the past couple of months but they’ve been having trouble – painfully slow searching and feeds for searches that didn’t work. It was a real shame because when it did work, it was a pretty decent tool. I had my last blogs & RSS class play with feedster for their last assignment and the spotty service caused a lot of irritation. So, I was really pleased to see that they’re back with a fresh design and feeds that seem to work as they should. Nice to have them back.

As a follow-up to the intro to blogs/RSS course I taught last Fall through the Education Institute, I’m teaching another 6-weeker this Spring called Getting the Most Out of Blogs, RSS and Other Web 2.0 Technologies. This time, I’m focusing on:

blog design, usability, content

creating content and style guidelines for library blogs (especially multi-author blogs)

marketing your library blog/RSS feeds

wikis

other social software tools: del.icio.us, Flickr, podcasting

This isn’t an intro course, so participants should have some understanding of what blogs are all about (at minimum), upon which I hope to build and fill in the rest of the social software “picture”. Blogging around here will either (a) remain as quiet as it has been this month, or (b) ramp up feverishly as I develop the course. I’m hoping and aiming for (b), but not making any promises!

If you or your library is looking to add a blog to your site but first need to bone up on the technology and everything it has to offer, there are a couple of upcoming online courses you should know about. Steven is facilitating one on blogs & RSS over at LearningTimes, and Megan Fox is holding one on new technologies for librarians (including PDAs, WiFi, blogs & RSS) via the continuing ed school at Simmons [via stuff]. They both sound like great courses and reading over the details for each has got me thinking about proposing something similar for the Ontario Library Association’s Education Institute.
