I was fortunate enough to be a part of the closing plenary at the Medical Library Association Annual Meeting last week. David Rothman, Melissa Rethlefsen, Bart Ragon and I presented on Web 2.0 tools and participated in a panel discussion (with Mark Funk, awesome MLA past president) after the formal presentations. It was a great time! I’ve given talks to smaller groups of medical/health librarians in the past, but being around so many of them at once just confirmed what I always sort of knew: medical librarians rock!

If you’re a member of MLA, the whole session was webcast and should be archived over at MLANET. Also, David’s got all four presentations up in one handy post. A hearty thanks to the MLA for having me and to the stellar session planners for making it all come together so seamlessly (and enjoyably)!

I was on research leave for four weeks this summer, and I spent my time exploring information architecture, usability, and user experience design. I had good intentions of blogging throughout my leave, both about the topic in specific, and the research leave process in general, but for whatever reason, it didn’t happen. I still have thoughts, notes, scribblings, and a mountain of resources that probably will make it into a few posts over the next few weeks, but for now, there’s this: slides for a presentation I gave to my colleagues at the library today. They’re a bit opaque without the accompanying narrative, but I thought I’d put them up anyway. If you’d a bit like more explanation on any of it, let me know!

Thank you, Jessamyn, for the PowerPointless layout and stylesheet, it ended up being the perfect solution for such a short presentation (plus minimal monkeying with someone else’s laptop with limited set-up time!).

If you’re looking to turn your blog into a web-based slideshow presentation, Pascal Van Hecke has a nice little script that will make it happen for you (this was published last Fall, just found it). Simply input your RSS feed and the script converts your last 10 posts into a slideshow using S5, which is a standard-based slideshow based on XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript (aside: I used S5 for the first time at CiL and highly recommend it).

For anyone who does any sort of regular presenting, I can see this being a really useful tool. Simply store all your content in a blog or wiki or social bookmarking tool, or really just anything that generates a feed for you, and head over to Pascal’s script to run it off into presentation format when you need to. I just generated a presentation from my del.icio.us feed and it worked like a charm! (Now I just have to get better at adding notes to the stuff I save in del.icio.us). Sure does make it easy to keep your presentation content up-to-date!
