post-switchover analysis

I’ve been running WordPress 1.2 on my other site for a few months and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, so when I heard that 1.5 was out, I decided it was time to convert bwal.net too. 1.5 is fabulous. Much appreciated improvements? The template editor, and static pages. Improvements I had hoped to see but aren’t here yet? Batch category editing and adding a new category from the “Write Post” screen.

As far as the switch goes, so far, so good. A few things are still in the works (update: all done!):

• static pages for:
  • the lists of blogging libraries
  • the bibliography
  • about page
  • my talks/articles
• redirects for all old links
• a working RSS feed. The new feed is up & running but when I attempt to subscribe to it in Bloglines, it doesn’t recognize it. Grumble.
• a working redirect from the old feed. I think this is working too, but it’s hard to tell when your new feed isn’t registering. Grumble, grumble.
• categories. And categorizing all archived posts.

I ran into the RSS feed problem when I switched over my site, I think there’s a line of code which is causing the feeds to 404 even though they actually exist. I found some info here that helped me fix the problem:

But I think it is also fixed in wordpress 1.5.1

I’ve just upgraded to Word Press 1.5 – from Blogger – a MASSIVE difference!

Still need to fiddle quite a bit though, and experiment with some themes. Getting the old posts from Blogger was technically easy – trouble was I just kept getting timed out.
