upgrade

I promised myself that after about 10 straight days of being attached at the hip to my laptop, I’d take to-day off and clean the house and read a book and have a relaxing “unplugged” day. Well, I cleaned the house, but then decided that I really needed to upgrade to WordPress 2.0, so that’s what I did. This site is hosted at dreamhost, which offers one-click installations and upgrades of WordPress, so it was hassle-free like you wouldn’t believe. WP 2.0 is pretty on the admin end, colourful too, and the single greatest improvement is having the ability to add new categories on the “write” page, instead of having to save a post as draft, go to the categories page, add a new category, return to the draft, assign the category, then publish (such a simple thing, I couldn’t believe they didn’t fix it in 1.5).

Of course, once I started noodling around my category archives, I started thinking about how I really should be doing some tagging around here, so off I went in search of a tag plugin and found & installed Ultimate Tag Warrior. And now I am resisting the urge to spend the rest of the day adding tags to all the archived posts. If I didn’t have this enticing book at my elbow, I’d probably do it.

Later: shame that the upgrade to WP 2.0.1 changes your feed URL entirely. I’ve set up the redirect and I’m monitoring Bloglines to make sure all goes well. And, look! A tag cloud! I installed the runPHP plugin to make the magic happen.

Right. Now, back to that book.

Later still: it looks like the RSS feed is redirecting as it should. Good. You don’t have to update your subscription, but FYI, the new feed is at http://www.blogwithoutalibrary.net/?feed=rss2.

I’m still fussing with the RSS feed redirect. When you say you “set up the redirect” what do you mean exactly, I’ve been bashing my head against this for a lot of today.

Hey Jessamyn – bash no more! I added a permanent redirect to my htaccess file and it seems to be redirecting just fine.

Hi
A quick query (I’ve read the site a lot, by the way – useful info!) – with the Ultimate Tag Warrior, did you have to edit anything to get it to say [tags for this post]? I installed it & it’s prefixing things with “Technorati tags” – which I didn’t really want.
Also, does it put the tag line if you’ve not yet tagged things?

I’ve currently disabled it, cos I didn’t like the label when I’d not got any tags!

Hi Emma – yep, I did a bit of configuring once I activated the plugin. I got it to say “tags for this post” by going into the Configuration area (Manage -> Tags -> Configuration) and adding the wording in the “Primary Content Tags” area (Prefix & Suffix). Unfortunately, the label does show up even if no tags are assigned.

Thanks!
Guess I’ll have to stick to the empty tags. Just have to post a few things, so that they start to vanish off the first page!

[...] Amanda was discussing the upgrade of WordPress to 2.0.1 (not done that myself, sticking to 2.0 for the present). However, she mentioned Ultimate Tag Warrior, and after a couple of hints from her (thanks), I’ve now got it installed on here. [...]
